Paul Thomas Anderson: “I’m very jealous of your close-ups… There’s a long line of people who have really tried to do Jonathan Demme close-ups and I try all the time, but I have to say, you got it right better than anybody…I’m like how is he doing that? I’ve tried so hard. I suppose it has to do with the right faces, but it has to do a little more than that…”
Barry Jenkins: “When I’m casting, I am casting for faces… I want faces that are open, that will invite the audience in… I don’t plan them… Every now and then there’s a moment. Acting is… an intellectual thing, so there’s always distance between the actor and the character. Sometimes on set, I’ll just find or feel this moment where the actor and the character, the distance shrinks. There is no space between them. What the audience is seeing if they are looking directly at them is the soul. It sounds like bullshit… but there’s just this moment where the actor, where everything just peels away. I tell the actor to just look right into the camera, and usually there is no dialogue. When you introduce dialogue the intellect kicks back in… There’s always a moment, especially in these last two films, where the audience has to look directly into the eyes of the characters in order to really feel what they’re feeling… When we do these scenes, the idea is to make them radically immersive… By mistake, we showed [If Beale Street Could Talk] in IMAX in DC, and oh my goodness– We shot it on ALEXA 65, the aspect ration was 2:1, so it’s in what they call “lie-MAX,” which is 1:93 not 4:3… so we’re like, way beyonds specs. The close-ups, Regina [King] and the wig, oh my god, in the mirror… It’s like, yes, yes… it’s like “human vision,” I like to call it.”
i just had the funniest experience in vr chat, i joined a random server and the one i joined had Japanese people so i waddled around in my goofy club penguin avatar that i have saved, after a while a guy walks up to me and clones my avatar so were both penguins then another guy shows up and clone my avatar
now keep in mind there only speaking Japanese i don’t know what they are saying, then another guy joins in, so i got a group of three penguin friends
we just waddle around and goof about, the one of them tries to talk to me, but not only do i not have a mic i also don’t speak Japanese, they figure out i don’t speak Japanese and start listing various places, they get the part of being European right, and after listing a lot of places they ask if im from the UK and when i nod they all just start cheering. after hanging out for a while one of them gets real close to me and whispers…
